Assiniboine Credit Union Now Bullfrog Powered

Recently, ACU moved forward on a new environmental initiative that makes it unique among credit unions in Canada. Nine of ACU’s Winnipeg locations are now choosing 100% green natural gas with Bullfrog Power!

Over the last several years Assiniboine Credit Union has been recognized locally and nationally as an environmental leader. Successful efforts to reduce waste, greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage are the result of a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. And now ACU has taken further steps to reduce its impact on the environment.

Why Bullfrog Power?

Bullfrog Power

Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, offers renewable energy solutions that enable homes and businesses to reduce their environmental impact, support the development of green energy projects in Canada and help create a cleaner, healthier world.

When a home or businesses chooses Bullfrog Power, Bullfrog’s generators put 100% green electricity or 100% green natural gas onto the respective energy system to match the amount of electricity or natural gas the home or business uses. Bullfrog ensures the energy going onto the systems on ACU’s behalf is from clean, renewable sources, displacing energy from polluting sources.

In addition, Bullfrog Power is a Certified B Corporation, which means that it meets higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. Its commitment to these standards and its innovative approach to advancing renewable energy makes Bullfrog Power a great partner for ACU.

Why Green Natural Gas?

Assiniboine Credit Union is committed to both reducing the energy it consumes in its operations and, through its partnership with Bullfrog Power, reducing the environmental impact of its energy.

ACU has reduced energy consumption through building and renovating with energy efficiency in mind, ensuring HVAC equipment is well maintained and operating properly, and engaging employees on energy saving opportunities.

Reducing the emissions from the energy used represents a bigger challenge.

One of ACU’s largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions is natural gas. While ACU has several branches that use geothermal energy for heating and cooling, natural gas is still used in many of its locations. The majority of these locations are leased and changing energy sources is not possible. Purchasing green natural gas allows ACU to displace its use of a non-renewable fossil fuel with renewable biogas.

“By choosing green natural gas from Bullfrog Power, ACU has shifted a part of its reliance on a polluting energy source to a cleaner fuel that does not contribute to global warming,” explains Philip Gass, Climate Change and Energy Project Manager at the International Institute for Sustainable Development. “ACU should be commended for establishing a leadership position amongst the business community by taking this step.”

ACU should be commended for establishing a leadership position amongst the business community by taking this step.

ACU is displacing approximately 60,000 cubic metres or more than 2200 gigajoules of natural gas in 2014, providing a greenhouse gas reduction of more than 110 tonnes of CO2e (or about 25% of ACU’s GHG emissions from natural gas).

What is Green Natural Gas?

Sourced from a unique, ground-breaking methane-capture project situated on one of Canada’s thousands of landfill sites, Bullfrog’s green natural gas is a climate-friendly alternative to conventional, polluting natural gas. Through this innovative technology, biogas is captured, cleaned up, and put onto the national natural gas pipeline, displacing fossil fuel-based gas and reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Bio Fuel Plant

Unlike fossil fuel-based natural gas, which comes from below the earth’s surface and increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, green natural gas does not increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It enables us to heat our buildings without contributing to climate change.

By choosing green energy, ACU is contributing to a healthier environment for Canadians, supporting community-based renewable energy projects in our region and across Canada, and helping lead the way to a renewably powered future.

You Can Have Green Natural Gas Too.

Thousands of other Canadian homes and organizations are doing their part to address climate change and air pollution by switching to green energy with Bullfrog Power.
